May: Progress Update

Even though this is suppose to be down time for me academically — my summer classes don’t start until next Tuesday — I have been busy finalizing my KMDI application, and drumming up some interest for my half-baked idea of a thesis at the moment. Here’s the pdf of my research scope I submitted as part of my application. (Feedback is always welcomed.) In the mean time, I have been getting some very helpful feedback from Prof. Hartel and I will be meeting with Prof. Ratto next week to get his thoughts and perspective on my research interests. The thought of pursuing a master’s thesis is both daunting and exciting, and I think the more connections I make with faculty members and researchers that have similar interests, the more enriching the experience will be.

Something that’s coming up quite soon is my first summer course on Visual Thinking which has a public lecture component on Thursdays. Read on…

Discovering Information Retrieval (IR)

The last two days has been intense. Monday afternoon was a lecture by Micheline Beaulieu on context-based evaluation of interactive systems, which tied in nicely with the social context course I took last fall. One of my greatest trepidation in foraying into the field of information, is that I have a thirst for technological understanding, but I am admittedly no CS material. Yet, Prof. Beaulieu’s research area and background gave me hope. Interdisciplinary approach — such as in the case of IR — doesn’t mean that everyone becomes an expert at everyone else’s field, it means an awareness and ability to speak in each other’s lexicons so a dialogue can happen.
