October: Progress Update

In Reflections on October 1, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I am actually writing this a few days in advance of October, as another visit from family is keeping me quite busy. I didn’t realize how much of my ‘leisure’ time is devoted to my various pursuit until I feel a sense of panic setting in that I haven’t quite done all my readings, or made any progress in editing papers and grant proposals for review submissions. However, I think that my time management is really paying off, as I am really panicking about not being ahead, not actually being behind. Note to readers: this is the down side of using stress as a motivator; it’s really hard to turn off, especially when you don’t need it.

This month, the focus is on applying to the SSHRC Master’s Grant, developing a research design for my ethnographic project in Prof. Hartel’s class, editing a paper for review at the Journal of Community Informatics, and getting my feet wet as a research team member in my first consultant gig as an “information professional”. My reading course for next semester with Prof. Mai has been approved as well, but I’ve got plenty on my plate already. That’s the nutshell version, here’s the expansive version.

What is this, and what is that?

As an aspiring information science professional (scientist seems a bit too grandiose for me at the moment), I am acutely aware of my shortcomings in terms of classification methods. The Library of Congress has a system for classifying books, but surely there are more fundamental and theoretical frameworks around which classification happens. My first year classes already brought my attention to the inherent biases that are unavoidable in the process of classification, yet I don’t even know where to begin in terms of actually creating a classification system.

In particular, my interest in music knowledge sharing has been growing, and it is becoming clear to me that I would like to pursue this in my studies and research. Having corresponded with Jens-Erik Mai over the summer in order to clarify which one of his courses this year would be most relevant to me, and finally meeting in person to discuss my own educational goals when it comes to classification, he swiftly offered to supervise me in an independent study project to explore the specific issues I want to learn more about. Considering his areas of speciality, this is an amazing offer. Proposal time!

September: Progress Update

In My Work, Reflections on September 2, 2009 at 11:37 am

The last month was monopolized by the drive to finish a co-authored class paper on community informatics (which has publishing potential as soon as I have some time away from it to do more editing), and keeping up with the break neck pace of properly hosting a ‘young’ visitor. You will notice that both of these things require after-work time, and some how, we’ve managed to survive, and September has some how arrived. Now that the school year is starting, I hope posting will become more regular again.

Having been assigned the role of orchestra librarian for the Sneak Peek Orchestra, my work has quickly begun with the ordering and preparation of parts in anticipation of a late-November concert. I’m quite new to this so there’s a bit of a learning curve, yet I find myself quite energized by the work, and look forward to the challenges that rehearsals will bring. I am also looking forward to the new member’s reception at the Heliconian Club, meet the members of the various sections, and get my first glimpse into life at the club. This is just the tip of the ice berg.
